Legal Officer

Based at the head office in Amsterdam and reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Legal Officer has primary ownership of legal risk management within Porticus. As part of this, the Legal Officer ensures that Porticus receives appropriate, timely legal advice and support on a wide range of matters. This may be either by providing advice directly her/himself or via coordinating the support of external providers. The Legal Officer works closely with the COO and other members of Porticus’ executive, enabling-functions and grant-making staff. 


Key responsibilities

First-hand legal advice and support 
  • Provide generalist first-line legal support to staff globally, and when necessary manage and coordinate such cases with the assistance of local counsel
    • Advise staff on interpretation of laws, policies and procedures
    • Provide input on governance related matters from Porticus’ perspective
    • Contribute to the review of grant agreements and other grant-related documents
    • Draft and review contracts with external providers of goods or services, including administrative and programmatic consultants and vendors
  • Advise and coordinate with Regional Directors, local counsel and other professional service providers on legal issues affecting regional offices, including regulatory, employment, corporate housekeeping, compliance and various other matters
  • Conduct periodic check-ins with Regional Directors to update on pending or new legal affairs, and provide support – both proactive and reactive – on relevant legal matters
  • Assist and advise as requested on special projects throughout the organization

Coordination and oversight of third-party legal advice and support
  • Clarify needs and urgency of support requests received; ensure their appropriate prioritisation and support from an adequate provider
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with (affiliated entities) Anthos/COFRA legal services
  • Manage, supervise and track the performance of external legal service providers 

Refinement of Porticus’ legal-support model
  • Monitor and periodically report on the range of Porticus legal needs 
  • Educate Porticus staff on how to make best use of legal support 
  • Build and improve Porticus’ legal processes, contracts and policies 
  • Facilitate cross-pollination of legal best practices, templates and issues that regional offices need to be aware of
  • Develop checklists, tools and guidance to assist staff on legal matters
  • Actively drive the evolution and institutionalization of the Legal Officer’s role such that in the near term Porticus has the appropriate legal support available in a responsive, diligent and effective manner


Experience and requirements

  • 4 to 6 years’ legal experience of which at least 4 years at a law firm within an international practice group
  • Master's degree in Law (LLM)
  • Fluent in English
  • Commitment to Porticus’ mission to be a force for good and core values of human dignity, social justice and sustainability

  • Experience that demonstrates independence, authority, business judgment and discretion handling confidential information
  • Excellent problem-solving / analytical / strategic skills
  • Superior drafting skills in English
  • Excellent communicator in English
  • Proven prioritization, planning, project- and process-management skills
  • Strong collaborative, relationship and influencing skills, with a broad set of stakeholders
  • Ability to create and preserve productive working relationships in an international environment
  • Driven, organized, results-oriented; able to work under pressure and multi-task without “dropping the ball”
  • Action-oriented in a positive way and entrepreneurial self-starter who can work well autonomously and in teams 
  • Proficiency using standard office software


Additional information

  • The position is based in Amsterdam
  • The Legal Officer reports to the Chief Operating Officer, who is also based in Amsterdam, and is part of the Global COO Office
  • May occasionally require some travel
  • This post requires the Legal Officer to interface with tact and diplomacy at all levels, including without limitation with:
    • internally:
      • Management Team members, Transformation Office, Operations Department, other enabling-function departments, regional offices and portfolio staff (in Amsterdam and other regions)
    • externally:
      • the foundations that are advised by Porticus, 
      • external counsel or other consultants;
      • grantees or their legal representatives to the extent that grant agreements require discussions or negotiations with them.
